It appears that Microsoft is undergoing some spring cleaning with its apps. We only just learned a few days ago that Microsoft was planning to scrap one of its beloved Android and iOS apps as OneDrive takes over its previous functionality.
Now, it seems that Microsoft is beginning to clear out some features from Edge, too. A recent report claims that the browser is warning people that the Collections feature will soon be retired, and while some data will be carried over, others will be lost forever.
Microsoft is removing one of Edge's best features
A long-time fan favourite Edge feature is getting axed
Microsoft Edge is losing its Collections feature
And it's not totally clear as to why
As spotted by Windows Report, a new notification within the dev branch of the Edge browser is informing people about the retirement of Collections. If you have never used it before, the Collections tool lets you gather everything you want to keep for later in one place. This, of course, includes webpages you want to refer back to in the future, but it also accepts text and images, making it a nice way to organize your thoughts.
Unfortunately, it seems that Microsoft no longer wants to keep maintaining it. A new notification is warning people that Collections is retiring, with the following message:
You will no longer be able to add new items to Collections. To keep your saved content, you can export it, or move all pages to your Favorites before removal.
Microsoft Edge is giving people two options. The first is to move everything in Collections over to Favorites. Microsoft says that clicking this will grab all the webpages within your Collections and tuck them away into a folder in your Favorites. However, it will not transfer over any images or text you have saved, so those will vanish if you don't save them in time.
Fortunately, if you do want to keep everything, there's also the option to export your data. This packs up everything you saved into a .CSV file, which you can import into apps like Excel.
The change has only appeared within Microsoft Edge Dev version of the browser, which means you won't see this notification on the release version yet. Microsoft has also yet to make an official announcement about this change. However, it should give fans of Collections plenty of time to get ready for when this notification appears on the release branch.
