Summary
- Edge's latest beta shows a banner stating that the browser launches automatically when you boot your computer.
- Tapping "No Thanks" stops this, but changing your default browser doesn't hide the banner.
- It's unclear whether this feature will make its way into a public Edge release.
It looks like Microsoft is testing a new Edge feature on Windows 11 — and it's not one most people are going to like.
Some users have reported that a banner is appearing at the top of Edge that says the browser "now launches when you sign in to Windows, so it's ready when you want to browse. Change this anytime in Settings." According to Windows Central, the notification only pops up in the latest beta version of Edge, so if you're running the regular public release, you won't see the banner (at least not yet).
Turning the feature off requires selecting a "No Thanks" button on the banner, so at least it's simple to get it to go away. Still, it looks like you'll need to opt out of this notification manually. It's likely that the banner will make its way to the public release of Microsoft Edge at some point. It doesn't seem like changing your default browser makes the banner disappear, even when you set a different one, according to Windows Central.
If you're an Edge user, the browser opening as soon as you turn on your computer probably isn't an entirely bad thing, since you're more than likely planning to surf the internet superhighway immediately anyway (Windows 11 also automatically preloads Edge when you turn on your PC to make it launch more quickly). But if you're not (and I'm sure a lot of XDA readers have long since ditched Edge), then the fact that you need to opt out of this feature is pretty annoying.
At least right now, it's likely Microsoft is testing this banner with a small group of users. Additionally, it's unclear if it will make its way to a future public release of Edge, though I wouldn't be surprised. Microsoft has a long history of trying to keep users locked into its browsers in various ways, including banners that suggest users don't need to download Chrome.
I’m a power user and I’m disabling these Windows features on purpose
If you've used Windows 11 for any length of time, you'll understand.
