Three new pieces of gaming hardware were just revealed by Valve: the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller. Complimenting Valve's popular PC game storefront and launcher, in additon to the Steam Deck, these new devices offer up different ways to experience your library of PC games on Steam.
The Steam Machine is more like a traditional game console, while the Steam Frame is a wireless virtual reality headset that lets you natively play VR games and stream non-VR games. Meanwhile, the Steam Controller incorporates features from the Steam Deck, like the touchpads, into a standard game controller design.
When will this new Steam hardware be released?
A lot of new hardware from Valve is coming soon
Valve has confirmed that the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Steam Controller will all be released in early 2026. Pricing for all of those devices hasn't been revealed yet, nor have any new Valve-developed games been announced for them. Still, there are plenty of reasons to look forward to these devices, which now have dedicated pages on Steam.
The Steam Machine is being positioned as a PC optimized primarily for gaming. Its functionality with SteamOS will feel more similar to a Steam Deck or game console than your traditional PC experience. In the video announcing the hardware, Valve says the Steam Machine is six times more powerful than a Steam Deck and features a custom AMD CPU and GPU that should enable 4K resolution gameplay at 60 frames per second.
Obviously, it'll be less of a hassle to hook it up to your TV. It will still have a desktop mode if you want to use it like a traditional PC, though. It'll be compatible with your Steam game library and features like cloud saves and remote play, so it's meant to fall in line with how you're already using Steam. 512 GB and 2 TB models of the Steam Machine will be available to purchase.
It's also supposed to work best with the new Steam Controller. This new controller from Valve will support features found on Steam Deck, like dual trackpads, haptic vibrations, gyro controls, and back buttons. The controller is supposed to have 35 hours of playtime thanks to the lithium-ion battery within it. Every controller will also come with "The Puck," which is a magnetic character and wireless adapter all in one. While I already own too many controllers to count, this new one certainly has me intrigued.
The Steam Frame is perhaps the boldest swing of all of this hardware. It's a wireless VR headset that lets you both play VR games natively and stream games from your Steam library via a wireless adapter. A new foveated streaming capability in the headset will track where the user's eyes are looking and adjust the image quality accordingly. The Steam Frame will come with its own revamped controllers made for VR too. The Deck Verified program will be updated next spring to also encompass Steam Frame and Steam Machine compatibility.
If you enjoy PC gaming but have been looking for new ways to experience your Steam library, then the Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and new Steam Controller should all look quite appealing to you.
