NotebookLM has long been the AI tool of choice for people who want to research a topic using their preferred sources. However, if you haven't explored its newer features, you may have missed some of the ways it has expanded its capabilities over the past few months.
Updates like its integration of certain Gemini chats, its updated Slide Decks feature, custom reports, and Cinematic Video Overviews mean that NotebookLM has some truly game-changing enhancements for your research.
NotebookLM is packed with new features that can help you research
You'll likely find something that helps you
While it's easy for a single update to be hit-or-miss for you, NotebookLM has undergone some significant changes in recent months that amplify its research capabilities.
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of Gemini Notebooks — which sync to your NotebookLM dashboard as well. These notebooks allow you to use your NotebookLM sources with Gemini's access to the web. But most notably, they turn your Gemini chats into a source for the corresponding NotebookLM notebook.
This means that NotebookLM has another place from which it can pull sources. Since Gemini can access the web, you can use it for questions that your original sources may not have answers to. You can also use Gemini to easily add additional context.
For example, I used a chat in Gemini, synced to my gardening notebook, to figure out if yellowing leaves on a plant were due to overwatering or heat stress. Because I was using Gemini, I could add context like my location (which lets it know about weather patterns) without needing to upload this separately to NotebookLM.
Gemini concluded that the yellowing leaves were likely heat stress. When I generated a slide deck in NotebookLM for tips on taking care of plants, this chat made up part of the sources and slide context.
The revamped Slide Deck and Reports features, which feel endlessly customizable, have also impressed me. Meanwhile, Cinematic Video Overviews changed the video experience in NotebookLM completely.
Cinematic Video Overviews revamp the experience significantly
Videos feel less like a narrated slideshow
For a while, I felt like NotebookLM was too focused on expanding functionality rather than improving its existing features. But recent updates have added some needed polish to features like Video Overviews.
I found that the original Video Overviews didn't respond well enough to prompts to customize the content and focus of the summaries generated by NotebookLM. However, Cinematic Video Overviews improved the functionality significantly.
These cinematic videos feel far less static — I no longer feel like I'm just watching a slideshow. In fact, in Google's announcement post on the feature, the company specifically says the new overviews move "beyond narrated slides".
This makes the generated videos more engaging and can help visualize key concepts. For example, in my PC building notebook, the video overview was able to visualize certain movements like putting the CPU in place.
If you're a visual learner, these new overviews can be a game-changer. You can also pair them with tools like slide decks and infographics to help create visuals related to your research.
Custom reports make NotebookLM a powerful research partner
Get information in the format you prefer
Custom reports were introduced as part of a revamped Reports feature in September 2025, but their functionality flew under the radar for many users. In truth, custom reports in NotebookLM do a lot more than you think.
By using custom reports, you can create content in a format that suits your preferences, rather than just a generic summary. This is extremely useful when you have a lot of disjointed sources around a specific topic, but want that information presented in a specific way.
I have been working on consolidating the research on my garden's plants in a way that is useful and accessible for me. NotebookLM has been a great tool for this, but custom reports are how I am able to present these varied sources into a useful guide for myself.
When it comes to research on certain health conditions, like fibromyalgia and chronic migraines, I can use reports to create simple glossaries and FAQs for things I might come across in my reading. This is particularly helpful when working with research papers.
There's a reason NotebookLM is a favorite for research
I've heard people say that they're not sure how to use NotebookLM, especially since its premise seems simple. But once you dive into its features, especially those Google has revamped in the past few months, you'll realize just how much potential it has.
It's no longer just a chatbot that helps you explore your selected sources, it's a comprehensive platform for exploring topics and researching new things. Of course, this doesn't mean it's only for students. Whether you're a freelancer, office worker, or someone just trying to learn something new, NotebookLM can help you explore a subject in many different ways.
