  • Nvidia hotfix resolves black screen issue on RTX 50-series GPUs
  • Users report that some issues remain with the new driver
  • Nvidia doesn't recommend installing the hotfix if your system is running normally

Nvidia has been in hot water lately. Its most recent RTX 50-series GPUs are in short supply, and among those that have been lucky enough to score a card, they've been met with a nasty bug that inexplicably blacks out the screen. Nvidia tried to solve the issue with a driver last week, which only caused more problems. Now, it says the black screen issue with RTX 50-series GPUs is fixed with its new 572.65 hotfix.

A fix for black screens, but other issues persist

It still needs more time in the oven

Nvidia doesn't usually release hotfix drivers. They're released out of the company's normal driver cadence, and you won't find them through official download channels like the Nvidia app. As the company explains: "These hotfix drivers are beta, optional and provided as-is. They are run through a much abbreviated QA process. The sole reason they exist is to get fixes out to you more quickly."

There are two issues addressed in the hotfix. First is the black screen issue across all RTX 50-series GPUs, including the recent RTX 5070. This reportedly happens when you're playing a game with Nvidia's Multi-Frame Generation enabled, crashing the game to a black screen and forcing a system reboot. Nvidia also says it addressed an issue with the RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 where they would run at reduced clock speeds after a reboot if the cards were overclocked.

There are still other issues that remain, however. One user reported that a long-standing issue with Frame Generation and forced V-Sync is still around, which causes high input lag.

Another user reported that the black screen issue remains, as well, specifically after installing the new hotfix. It may not be a result of the driver alone, however. With these hotfixes, it's best to run a pass of Display Driver Uninstaller first to avoid any driver conflicts. It's especially important with these drivers, as they aren't managed in the Nvidia app.

The black screen issue on RTX 50-series GPUs is inconsistent, which makes troubleshooting and fixing the problem all the more difficult. It could be related to software, hardware, or some combination of both. Hopefully this fix will work its way into the next official driver release so Nvidia can put this issue to rest.

If you're using an RTX GPU without issue, Nvidia doesn't recommend installing the hotfix. It's a beta driver, and it could introduce new issues to your system. As the community note reads, "the safest option is to wait for the next WHQL certified driver."
