While Obsidian's core functionality is undeniably powerful, its aesthetic can sometimes feel bland. A little visual flair can make all the difference in our digital workflow. Being the central hub of our knowledge, our Obsidian vaults deserve to be more than just functional. Over time, I've discovered a handful of incredible community plugins that have completely transformed how my Obsidian looks and feels. Let’s discuss the Obsidian plugins I simply can’t live without, the ones that bring an aesthetic touch to my everyday note-taking and knowledge management.
I replaced all productivity tools with Obsidian for a month and here is how it went
My 30-day Obsidian experiment
5 Calendar
Add a monthly view to your Obsidian vault
Obsidian lacks calendar view by default. Here is where the Calendar plugin comes into play. I have downloaded it and pinned the monthly view in the bottom left corner. It’s a functional powerhouse for someone like me who uses Obsidian as a daily journey and relies on daily notes to get the job done. It provides a visual representation of the month and highlights days on which I have created a daily note.
Once you have installed and enabled the Calendar plugin (which you can do from Obsidian's Community Plugins settings), the monthly view will automatically appear in your right sidebar (or left, depending on your layout).
4 Iconize
Decorate your Obsidian pages
Iconize has been a game-changer for adding that extra layer of visual personality to my Obsidian vaults. Before I discovered Iconize, my file explorer felt like a giant list of titles. For me, Iconize isn't just a cosmetic upgrade; it's become an essential part of how I organize my knowledge.
So, what exactly does Iconize do? It allows you to assign unique icons to your Obsidian notes, folders, and even specific pieces of content within your notes. These icons then appear in various places throughout your Obsidian interface, mainly in the sidebar. For example, a little lightbulb icon might indicate an idea or concept I’m brainstorming.
Similarly, a book icon could represent notes on a particular book I'm reading, and so on. The possibilities are endless. I can simply type /icon, describe an icon, and pick a relevant emoji from the suggestion menu.
3 Excalidraw
Unlock drawing tools in Obsidian
Although Obsidian offers Canvas, it’s still basic at best compared to dedicated tools like Excalidraw. Here’s where this third-party plugin comes into play. It’s not just a drawing tool; it’s like having a digital whiteboard right inside my knowledge vault.
Instead of just words on a page, I can draw shapes, connect them with arrows, and create mind maps or flowcharts in real-time. Excalidraw's free-form drawing capabilities are perfect for capturing these fleeting thoughts quickly. I can scribble down keywords, draw rough diagrams, and jot down connections in no time. I can use different shapes, arrows, drawing tools, insert images, and more to visualize my ideas.
There is an option to tweak the background shade, and once the diagram is ready, I can insert it as a drawing in my existing page.

2 Charts
Insert different types of charts in Obsidian
Charts plugin became an absolute must-have in my toolkit for transforming tables into visual insights. It isn't limited to just one or two types of visualizations. It offers a wide array of chart options to suit different kinds of data and insights. I can create line, bar, pie, scatter, area, and polar area charts right into my Obsidian notes.
I can typically define the data directly within a code block in my Markdown note. There is another straightforward way to define a chart using the dedicated editor menu. While the default charts look clean and functional, the plugin often provides options to customize their appearance. I can usually adjust things like colors, labels, titles, axes, and legends.
1 Style Settings
Take your Obsidian aesthetics to the next level
Your Obsidian setup is simply incomplete without the Style Settings plugin. If you are even remotely interested in customizing the look and feel of your Obsidian setup, go ahead with Style Settings. Style Settings exposes a plethora of customizable options that tweak almost every aspect of Obsidian’s interface.
Style Settings truly shines when paired with third-party themes like Encore. Theme developers often build in a wide range of customizable options that are controlled by the Style Settings plugin. This means that instead of just applying the base Encore theme, I can head into its unique settings and explore the range of customization options.
For me, it's the unsung hero that unlocks the true potential for personalization, going far beyond the basic theme selection. It encourages experimentation. I can try out different color combinations, font pairings, and layout tweaks without any fear of messing up my setup.
From functional to fabulous
So, if you are looking to move beyond the default Obsidian look and infuse your vault with some serious visual charm, give these plugins a try. After all, a visually pleasing vault can lead to a more engaging and productive workflow. What are you waiting for?
