Summary

  • Disable Windows 11 display-detection animation to avoid stutters when running games or heavy apps.
  • Dark mode gains broader dialog support and fixes unreadable text; still a reluctant addition, but improved.
  • Advanced Appearance fonts rewritten to fix legacy Windows 7 values and prevent registry corruption bugs.

Third-party customization apps have been a key part of the Windows experience for years now. People turn to them for several reasons: they may like how it looks, they might want to add a feature that Windows doesn't include, and sometimes Microsoft makes a design decision that makes you want to throw in the towel and try something else.

One such app is Winaero Tweaker, which we've experimented with in the past and thoroughly liked. Now, the developer has released a patch that adds some nice new tweaks and fixes a pretty critical bug.

Winaero Tweaker 1.64.1 lets you disable animations, tweak dark mode, and fix a bug

The developer, Sergey Tkachenko, breaks down what we can expect from Winaero Tweaker version 1.64.1. The biggest change is an option that lets you disable the animation Windows 11 plays when it detects a new display. Apparently, the animation would cause issues if you had something system-intensive playing at the same time (such as a game), so disabling it seems like a great idea if you're always messing with your setup.

If you enjoy using dark mode on Winaero Tweaker, Sergey has been hard at work making tweaks to it. More dialog boxes now support dark mode, and some previously unreadable text has been fixed. Then, Sergey takes some time in the patch notes to lament that they even added dark mode. Keep at it, Sergey; as a dark mode fan, your work doesn't go unnoticed.

Even if you're uninterested in those features, Winaero Tweaker 1.64.1 introduces a big fix for a critical issue:

The font values in the options listed under the "Advanced Appearance" section were using a hardcoded value designed for Windows 7. It was a legacy code that was working fine for its time. However, if you reset these options on anything newer, you would receive the outdated Registry value for the appropriate font options, including statusbar, desktop icons, menus, and even system font. It is not the most popular Tweaker option, so the issue remained not noticeable for several years. Ironically, I also stopped using it, as I am perfectly fine with the default fonts and their scaling Microsoft made in Windows 10 and above.

Sergey rewrote the code to bring the Advanced Appearance code up to modern standards and prevent a nasty corruption bug from occurring. Sergey did this due to a pretty scathing bug report from a user, so they took the time to remind everyone that they're doing this for free, that bugs can still make their way through, and that he'd never deliberately mess things up.

If you want to read all the patch notes and download the app for yourself, head over to the Winaero Tweaker 1.64.1 page. Just go easy on Sergey; it sounds like they're going through a rough time as-is.
