Despite Overwatch 2 taking some lumps over the years, Blizzard Entertainment has not stopped trying to make improvements. In 2025, Overwatch 2 received multiple big updates, with the latest Season 16 patch introducing a brand-new Stadium mode.

Joining the roster of Quick Play and Competitive modes, Stadium will exist as a pillar of gameplay going forward. That means all future hero releases and balance patches will have Stadium mode in mind, because it is not going away. Stadium is a round-based deathmatch mode where players augment a non-swappable hero with new stats and abilities. It houses a gladiatorial combat theme with cheering fans and an announcer to hype up the action.

Stadium mode gameplay features

Stadium mode is more than just a new map or a new rule set. It's built to shake up Overwatch's formula in an effort to make games more action-packed while still allowing for some downtime in between rounds. Also, it opens up new strategic considerations that rewards long-term planning as well as on-the-spot adaptations.

What to expect in Stadium mode

• Fight to the death - Matches in Stadium Mode are round-based 5v5 deathmatches in a best-of-7 framework
• Transform your hero - There is no hero swapping, so use Items and Powers to improve stats and unlock abilities to counter the enemy team
• Choose your POV - 3rd person perspective is enabled in Stadium
• Rank Up - Stadium mode will have its own ladder with exclusive rewards for higher tiers
• Claim Rewards - Earn Stadium: Initiation exclusive rewards like the Soldier: 76 Stadium Rookie skin

The biggest change compared to traditional Overwatch is not allowing hero swapping. A core component of Overwatch is changing team compositions on the fly to counter enemies. In Stadium mode, countering the enemy is done over rounds through Items and Powers. These allow crazy combinations like opening up access to flying for Reinhardt’s charge. However, not every hero will be available for Stadium, with just 17 making the cut.

• Damage - Ashe, Cassidy, Genji, Mei, Reaper, Soldier: 76
• Support - Ana, Juno, Kiriko, Lucio, Mercy, Moira

All in all, Overwatch 2 is taking another risk to refresh its gameplay and add new market appeal to its hero-shooter base. Only time will tell if adding an economy, round-based deathmatch mode is enough to acquire new players or to get some of its old players back.
