Being a beginner, I believed that professional-grade photo editing meant paying the mandatory monthly subscription for Adobe Photoshop. I was wrong. While the industry standard is powerful, it comes with significant demands: high cost, heavy system resources, and a restrictive license.

After years of feeling the pinch, I discovered a hidden gem that has completely changed my workflow: PhotoDemon. This isn’t just another basic, free editor; it is a lightweight open-source application for Windows that offers hundreds of editing tools without costing you a single cent.

Issues with Photoshop

It goes beyond the costs

Although Adobe has improved Photoshop’s efficiency, it is still a massive resource hog. While it performed as expected on my Windows desktop, I constantly ran into lag, slow startup times, and other issues on my slightly low-powered laptop.

The fact that PhotoDemon is a completely portable, 20MB application that runs off a USB drive without any installation is insulting to the Adobe model. It proves that you don’t need all the bloat to deliver professional power.

Also, I had high hopes when I heard about Photoshop’s AI features. But in most cases, they are basic at best. Many times, I still end up having to manually tweak the AI-generated results.

And then came the subscription plan, where I was at risk of losing my data and program if I missed a single cycle. It’s a recurring expense that’s designed to make me feel guilty if I take a creative break. PhotoDemon’s solution to this is simple: it’s free, and I own the software forever.

PhotoDemon’s core advantages

Open-source and portability

Switching to PhotoDemon solved my biggest pain points instantly. The first one is, of course, the cost. It’s 100% free and open-source. I never have to budget for editing software again.

Another crucial advantage (and the one where it beats GIMP) is portability. The entire application is a tiny folder, typically around 20MB, that I can run directly from a USB drive or even a network folder.

I now carry my full-featured editing suite in my pocket. It redefines what a professional tool can be. Now, let’s have a word about its performance as well.

Since PhotoDemon isn’t bogged down by layers of old code and marketing features, it is quite fast. Launching the application is nearly instant, even on my older laptop.

Professional features that replace Photoshop

Has the power you need

One of my biggest relief points was realizing that PhotoDemon is highly compatible with my existing files. It offers extensive format support, including RAW files, but the ability to open and work with multilayer PSD files was quite reassuring.

I can retrieve old projects and still maintain compatibility with colleagues who are stuck in the Adobe ecosystem. At times, I need to do more than just crop and brighten. For serious image correction, I rely on tools like Curves, Levels, and powerful Shadow/Highlight recovery. PhotoDemon has all of these with real-time previews.

It also includes a built-in macro recorder and a batch processor. I can record a complex sequence of edits, like applying a specific tone curve, resizing, and sharpening, and then apply that entire process to hundreds of images in a single batch operation.

There are small, neat touches as well. I can tweak the app’s accent color and even glance over the photo preview right on the app icon in the Windows taskbar.

Like Photoshop, PhotoDemon also supports content-aware fill. But the difference is that it runs the entire operation locally. Simply put, the photo editing power I need is all there in PhotoDemon.

What you might miss

Before you switch

Now, I need to be fair. While PhotoDemon replaced Photoshop for about 90% of my workflow, it’s not a perfect, one-to-one clone (like Photopea). There are a few things I had to adjust to accept I wouldn’t have anymore. Here are the caveats you should know if you're considering making the switch.

The biggest limitation right now is that PhotoDemon is exclusively a Windows application. If you are primarily on Mac or Linux, this is where you will have to look elsewhere (perhaps towards tools like Krita or GIMP, though they come with their own learning curves). Since I do all my heavy editing on a Windows desktop, this wasn’t an issue for me.

Also, if your job relies on high-end graphic design, complex vector drawing, 3D modeling, or requires a deep integration with other Adobe products like Premiere Pro or Illustrator, PhotoDemon simply won’t replace that entire suite.

Avoid the Photoshop trap

At first, I was skeptical of ditching a robust tool like Photoshop in favor of PhotoDemon. Of course, it doesn’t have every single Photoshop feature, but it strips away the subscription fees and massive system requirements.

From its extensive support for file types like PSD and RAW, to its portability and open-source nature, PhotoDemon should be high on your priority list if you are looking to ditch Photoshop and aren’t a huge fan of GIMP (even after the massive v3.0 update).

However, if you are looking for a Photoshop alternative that just works on any browser, I highly recommend checking out Photopea.
