Summary
- PS Portal can now stream PS5 games via Cloud Gaming, starting Nov 5 — handhelds unlocked.
- Thousands of blockbusters and many PlayStation Plus catalog titles are streamable from the cloud.
- It requires PlayStation Plus Premium, sparking complaints and fears of PS+ price hikes.
I've always been a huge fan of cloud gaming. There's just something so satisfying about booting up a triple-A game on a lightweight, portable device that I adore. For people over in the Sony ecosystem, their main way to tap into cloud games is via the PS Portal, which gives you a full handheld system that can play games remotely. However, until today, people could only really do remote play with a console they already owned.
Now, the PS Portal has finally "unlocked" its true potential. In a new update, Sony has added the ability to stream PS5 games via its Cloud Gaming service directly to the PS Portal. However, as exciting as that may seem some people aren't wholly pleased with the news.
The PS Portal can now stream PS5 games via Cloud Gaming, for a price
Over on the PlayStation Blog, Sony explains what we can expect from Cloud Gaming on the PS Portal. You can stream select PS5 games via Cloud Gaming to your PS Portal on November 5th at 6 pm PST, and at a glance, things are looking pretty sweet:
At launch, thousands of PS5 games support Cloud Streaming, including blockbusters such as Astro Bot, Borderlands 4, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Fortnite, Ghost of Yōtei, Grand Theft Auto V, and Resident Evil 4.
In addition, hundreds of compatible games from the PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog, including Cyberpunk 2077, God of War Ragnarök, Hogwarts Legacy, Sword of the Sea and The Last of Us Part II Remastered are also streamable directly from the cloud.
If you want to see which titles are supported before you jump in, be sure to visit the PlayStation Cloud Streaming compatible games list and double-check that your faves are on there.
However, the update hasn't been a complete hit. Over on the announcement thread on the /r/PlayStation subreddit, the top comments include people lamenting that the feature is only for people subscribed to PlayStation Plus Premium, the highest tier of the lot.
One commenter says that it's "a no brainer to just let everyone use it, or at the bare minimum have the lowest tier," while another points out that this may cause a price hike for PS+. And with the recent 50% price spike with the Game Pass Ultimate, I don't think concerns about a price increase are unfounded.
Still, it's a feature that people have been asking for, so it's good that Sony has finally added it in. And if you don't own a PS Portal yet, why not just build your own instead?
