Who doesn’t know Minecraft here in 2025? This is one of the best games of all time in any variation you could measure. Whether it’s the simple design and art style that allows players to dive in quickly, or the soothing music while exploring the different terrains, it has become one of the most recognized franchises on the planet.

The creator, Markus “Notch” Persson, released the first public alpha of Minecraft in May 2009, and it has exploded since to the tune of 300+ million copies sold. From constant updates to the original game (dubbed the Java Edition), to the newer ports getting released on everything from consoles to phones. The multitude of spin-off games and media, the toys and figures, and even the face of Minecraft, Steve, got an invitation to Super Smash Bros. But how did Minecraft get to this point? Let’s continue to delve further into a brief history of this record-setting game.

Minecraft is one of the most influential sandbox crafting games of all time, where gamers can build and create to their heart's content.

How Minecraft Started As A Simple Java Game

Its simple design came from humble beginnings.

As mentioned, Persson first showcased an early version of Minecraft on YouTube, dubbing it “Cave Game tech test” in 2009. Inspired by other games in a similar “mining” vein, like Dungeon Keeper and Infiniminer, and taking the name “Minecraft” from a player while in alpha, Persson worked through multiple iterations before finally feeling comfortable with the game’s foundation. Persson also gave a lot of credit to the community on TGIsource, a forum where indie devs and creators came together to discuss their latest projects. With them, he got a lot of constructive feedback and a crowd who wanted to see the game succeed.

He continued development, providing constant updates until finally releasing the core version, dubbed the 1.0 “Adventure Update”, which added the RPG elements and story Persson was striving for when he initially created Minecraft. At this point, Minecraft, already in its Beta phase (and selling millions), ramped up to an entire dev team (2010) and considered itself fully launched in December 2011. He never imagined that Minecraft would go from being a weekend project to the multi-million-dollar franchise it is today.

How to upgrade your gaming laptop the right way

Buying a new gaming laptop is exciting, but if you want to make the most of it, you'll want to prioritize the specs according to your needs.

Minecraft Is One Of The Most Decorated Games Of All Time

300 million copies sold and still one of the top games with the most active users.

Players have, since 2010, been flocking to Minecraft in droves. Minecraft has routinely been downloaded on its various platforms, from phones to the latest consoles (PS5 and Xbox X/S), and it even reached 63+ million active users in a single day back in December 2024! If I were to hazard a guess, it was most likely a boon due to the holidays, but it’s nonetheless imposing. In an era where live service games come and go (even Minecraft’s mobile AR game has been shut down), the core game is so good that players keep returning for more.

Most Notable Awards

To say that Minecraft’s award cabinet is complete would be an understatement. It was among the highest-rated games of 2010 and 2011, often receiving high praise from reviewers and game magazines. Here’s a short list of the awards it owns:

Minecraft Is For Everyone!

It has become one of the more popular franchises.

In May 2011, Minecraft was one of the 80 games selected for display in The Art of Video Games exhibit. I use this as an example of how Minecraft imagery had a significant cultural impact. It was placed with the who’s who of video games of that time, which had only been around for a year. It has even been positively received for its use in education and humanitarian aid, many of which were agriculture and civil engineering-based.

The spin-offs keep coming

The franchise became so big that they naturally wanted to expand upon the Minecraft library.

To name a few:

  • Minecraft Story Mode - 2015
  • Minecraft: Education Edition - 2016
  • Minecraft Story Mode Season 2 - 2017
  • Minecraft: Dungeons - 2020
  • Minecraft: Legends - 2023

A live-action movie is coming in 2025

On April 4, A Minecraft Movie will premiere in the U.S., and it will be met with great anticipation from fans of the franchise. The latest trailer from Warner Bros. has over 27 million views as of this moment. Starring Jack Black and Jason Momoa, it takes a group of strangers on an epic adventure inside Minecraft.

The Impact Minecraft Had On The Gaming Industry

The Minecraft fan community has been strong for over a decade

Did you know there are over 5,000 active Minecraft servers currently? Or is Minecraft still in the top ten in terms of games being watched on Twitch? The number of mods and variants from the community represents the different fans and their impact on gaming. It’s often referenced in other games as a nod to its influence on those who hope to have the same effect as Minecraft has. With all this working in its favor, it’s no wonder that it is the best-selling game of all time (as of 2025).

Noteable Minecraft Mods

  • Optifine - a graphics enhancer
  • Worldedit - A map-builder that runs inside the game
  • Bobby - A mod to extend render distance without affecting game performance
  • Biomes O' Plenty - Adds more than 100 new areas to the overworld and nether.
  • Create - A very technical mod that allows you to build automated machines and farm difficult resources
