Summary

  • Winux mimics Windows 10/11 closely - themes, Edge, WinBoat, and a nearly identical desktop.
  • 11.25.12 update: Ubuntu 24.04.3 base, kernel 6.14, OneDrive GUI, gaming tools, Edge, Steam preinstalled
  • You don't need an identical Windows clone to switch - KDE Plasma and other distros work fine.

As Windows 10 users are left in the cold due to Windows 11's strict system requirements, and Windows 11 users tire of Microsoft's plan for the OS, Linux developers have been trying their best to encourage people to make the jump over to their distro. Some have advertised their strengths over Microsoft's operating system, and others, such as Zorin OS, try to make things as comfortable as possible for escapees, including adding OneDrive support and Windows-like desktop layouts.

However, one OS is hoping to draw the Windows crowd by being so alike Windows that it's hard to tell the two systems apart. It's called Winux, and it just received its 11.25.12 update just in time for the new year.

Winux gets its 11.25.12 update to round out 2025

It's Windows, without the Windows

As spotted by Linuxiac, the Winux dev team has announced a new update for their OS. Winux is a unique case, as it's an Ubuntu-based system designed to mimic the look and feel of the Windows operating system down to the minutiae. In fact, there's a good chance you scrolled past the image above thinking it was a screenshot of Windows 11, when in fact, that's a still frame from the Winux demo video.

Winux doesn't skimp on the details when making itself look and feel like Windows. For instance, you get Microsoft Edge by default, and it comes with WinBoat to help you run Windows apps on Linux. Plus, the devs have added native support for OneDrive with this newest update, which is good news for people who have tons of files stored on Microsoft's cloud storage.

If you want to give it a shot for yourself, head over to the Winux OS website and give it a download. However, I do want to stress that other Linux distros are very Windows user-friendly these days, so you don't need a distro that looks identical to Microsoft's OS to understand what's going on.

For instance, check out these Linux distros you should use instead of upgrading to Windows 11, or read why I recommend KDE Plasma for Windows escapees. Trust me; you really don't need all the bells and whistles of Windows to get used to using Linux as a daily driver.
