If you’re looking to breathe life into an older beloved game, there’s no better way to do so than by slapping on a VR headset and getting as immersed in the world as possible. While there are some incredible VR native games out there, you might find the selection to be a bit slim if there’s a classic game you’re looking for.

That is where the incredible communities around these games come in, modding games so that they are playable on your preferred VR platform. If you’re looking for something new out of these older games, you came to the right place.

5 Outer Wilds

Loop forever

One of the more unique games to come from the past generation, Outer Wilds has you exploring a solar system on the verge of annihilation as the star is on the brink of going supernova. The game consists of exploring the system in loops of 22 minutes at a time, as the whole game gets reset when the player either dies or the star explodes.

You can play the Outer Wilds thanks to the NomaiVR mod, which supports multiple PC versions of the game including Epic Games Store, Steam, and Game Pass. There are things you’d never expect to be able to do, like roast marshmallows over a fire or watching the sun to supernova right in your face that make this experience so unique.

4 Alien: Isolation

In your living room, everyone can hear you scream

Perhaps one of the best games in the long list of Alien games is Alien: Isolation, an incredibly tense and stressful horror game where you are stranded on a space station with a xenomorph. The xenomorph is constantly stalking and hunting you throughout the game, and donning your VR headset and getting immersed in the horror of never knowing what’s around the corner is an entirely new experience.

8 VR games that single-handedly justify buying a VR headset

If you're on the fence about buying a VR headset, these games might finally convince you

Setting up the game for a VR experience is pretty easy, using the Mother VR Mod to get it going only requires a few steps to complete before playing. Once you’re in and playing as Amanda Ripley, daughter of Ellen Ripley from the original Alien film, you’ll all but be able to feel the xenomorph breathing down your neck as you play.

3 Star Wars Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast

Become a true Jedi

This classic first and third-person shooter takes you to the massive expanded Star Wars universe in one of the most beloved Star Wars games of all time. Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast first released all the way back in 2003, telling the tale of Kyle Katarn, a mercenary and former Jedi who has lost his connection to the Force.

Jedi Outcast takes place eight years after the events of Return of the Jedi, so you can expect to encounter some of your favorite characters like Luke Skywalker, Lando Calrissian, and Mon Mothma while you work to regain your Jedi powers and stop the sith and the Empire.

Getting Jedi Outcast going on your VR platform of choice is fairly straightforward, using the JKCR port for the Pico 4 and Quest 2/3/Pro. Doing so lets you feel just like a Jedi by letting you actually throw your lightsaber with motion controls, deflect blaster beams, and make the hand motions for various force powers and watch them happen in-game. Perhaps the most rewarding part of this mod is when you get into your first lightsaber battle against a Sith and watching your lightsaber swing with your arm.

2 Firewatch

An immersive walking sim

The incredible story-based Firewatch will take you on a narrative journey, complete with intrigue, low-level horror, an unreliable narrator, and some twists that will tear at your heart. Taking the game to VR lets you experience all this in a true first person mode, with you taking the role of Henry as he gets stationed at the Shoshone National Forest in remote Wyoming.

The Two Forks VR mod for Firewatch comes from the same developer as the NomaiVR mod for Outer Wilds, and a ton of detail was paid to ensuring that the gameplay flows as well as the regular version of the game. Climbing over logs and jumping down ledges has a few modifications to help navigate some of the more treacherous portions of the game to keep motion sickness down, so if you get sick easily you don’t need to worry as much with this mod.

Firewatch isn’t a long game, with the whole thing playable in around four to five hours, but it makes for an unforgettable VR experience.

1 Skyrim VR

Fus ro dah in VR

A bit of a cheat since there is already an official release of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim out for VR platforms, but playing the vanilla version of the game isn’t always the most intuitive version of the game, which is where a plethora of Skyrim mods come in.

A lot of the mods you’re going to want on this fourteen-year-old game include:

  • NavigateVR
  • VRIK Player Avatar
  • Wearable Health Bars
  • MageVR

NavigateVR gives you a handy in-game map and compass while removing the HUD. VRIK Player Avatar turns your entire body into your character avatar, letting you match your physical movements to your character, even going as far as to let you control individual fingers on your hand. The Wearale Health Bars mod lets you place your health, stamina, magicka bars on your hands, removing immersion-breaking HUD features and placing them in a easy to see location. And finally the MageVR mod keeps you in the game by removing the need to pause the game with needless menus. The mod lets you access options in the game without having to navigate through menus while also letting you draw glyphs in real time.

The nice thing is that the VR version of Skyrim comes with the Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn DLC so you can experience the complete version of the game.
