Many people within the Star Wars community enjoy playing games like EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 online. Most recently, the game has seen a surge of players hopping onto platforms like Steam and bringing groups of players with them to dive into multiplayer matches. The influx of players caused the game to set new concurrent player records on Steam and even made waves on consoles where the game was available. This stems from the growing trend of people expressing their desire to see a Star Wars Battlefront 3 developed and released by Electronic Arts. But despite how loud the Star Wars community has been about it, EA doesn't have any plans to return to a galaxy far, far away anytime soon, nor does EA really need to make a new Star Wars Battlefront like that right now.
But with the clear indication of major interest in a sequel from the resurgence of Star Wars Battlefront 2 online, EA can still take advantage of it should they decide to do so. If the company wants to, there are a few ways it can approach taking things further with Battlefront 2 and keeping the interest of players while it figures out what to do next with the franchise. It would be a terrible idea to let the trend of active fans go to waste by not following up with something Battlefront-related, especially when the benefits of doing so would actually help EA significantly. Here are three ways that Electronic Arts can capitalize on the Star Wars Battlefront 2 resurgence.
Ranking every Star Wars Battlefront game: The best in the series
The Star Wars Battlefront series is very popular among Star Wars fans. Let's rank every entry of the series. What are the best Battlefront games?
3 Updating the current game with new DLC
Capturing new kinds of command posts
This may seem like a long shot for some people, but it remains a viable option for EA to consider when it comes to addressing issues with Star Wars Battlefront 2. Official support for the game ended in 2020, around the time the COVID-19 pandemic began. There were no new downloadable content packs or major updates to the game, despite the servers remaining active, allowing everyone to play online multiplayer. More than anything else, those who play want to see some form of new content that keeps things fresh for them, especially after some of them have continuously played Star Wars Battlefront 2 for over five years, since EA stopped offering support to it.
Instead of doing anything major to the game itself, why not offer an expansion or new DLC pack to add to it? Whether it's an extra map or a few new heroes to play with, this is something that would get a lot of attention and cause even more people to return to the game. Even something as surface-level as a map from the first EA Star Wars Battlefront game, but remixed for Star Wars Battlefront 2, would be enough to get players interested in exploring it. But having a few more hero characters based on newer Star Wars projects would be something even better for fans. One of the biggest criticisms towards EA and Star Wars Battlefront 2 was how they abandoned support for the game just before Lucasfilm released more shows like Ahsoka, The Mandalorian, and Andor on Disney+. Pulling from any of those projects for at least one new hero to play with could be a great idea.
2 Bring official mod support to the game
Take advantage of the big modding community
Speaking of new content, one aspect that has kept Star Wars Battlefront 2 active for a long time is the thrivingmodding scene online for the PC version of the game. Many people have taken some of the game's character files and modded them to look like other Star Wars characters. This includes fan favorites from various Star Wars shows and movies, but also extends to incorporate characters from Star Wars Legends stories and other video games. Much of this can be seen in forums about the game online, including some Steam forum threads, where people get very creative about how they bring in their favorite characters into Star Wars Battlefront 2. In some cases, fans have been able to make mods to maps and recreate stages from previous Star Wars Battlefront games.
Although it would definitely need to have some restrictions, adding official mod support to the game could help bolster the interest in it online. Like many other video games with mod communities on PC, Electronic Arts may need to establish some ground rules to avoid highlighting some of the more extreme aspects of mods shared online. However, much of the game's resurgence has been on the PC platform through platforms like Steam, which could benefit the most from having official mod support in Star Wars Battlefront 2. Other platforms, such as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, may not benefit significantly from this, as most cross-platform games don't typically bring mods to them anyway. However, it's an idea to cater to the crowd that's already providing substantial support for the game.
1 Put plans in place for a new game
The most obvious action
The most requested thing from Star Wars fans at Electronic Arts is to have some sort of idea for a new Star Wars Battlefront game, and preferably Battlefront 3. At the moment, EA has no plans to return to the series, mostly because of their focus on the Battlefield multiplayer franchise and other Star Wars-related projects already in development, like the upcoming sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Zero Company. But beyond those games already in motion, what's to stop the company from making a new Battlefront game, even if it's not a numbered sequel to Star Wars Battlefront 2? With the very loud and abundant interest in the game that has continued to be present since before the resurgence of players online, any company worth its salt would take notice and have a discussion about it behind the scenes.
Could a new Star Wars Battlefront game work if it were built differently from previous EA Battlefront 2 games? Yes, it would, especially if it incorporated more aspects of newer Star Wars projects and other parts of the franchise that have gone untapped. The most obvious place to look would be eras of the franchise from the Star Wars Legends continuity, including The Old Republic. These are parts of the franchise that people love and have long wanted to see more of, as evidenced by the reaction to the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake project, which is still in development. Electronic Arts may not necessarily need to make a Star Wars Battlefront 3, but finding a way to bring about a new game to fans who are hungry for something could be a win for everyone moving forward.
For the Republic of fans
It's very apparent that people want to see more of Star Wars Battlefront. The overwhelming number of players returning to EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 is more than enough proof that interest in the series is still around and active enough to garner attention from everyone. Electronic Arts might be focused on releasing other Star Wars video games in the coming years. Still, the sheer number of people who are loudly expressing the need for something new with the Battlefront franchise shouldn't be ignored by the company. There's an opportunity here for EA to capitalize on what could be a lightning bolt of fan support, which could lead to a lot of profits and customer loyalty in the long run. But as a little green friend once said, it's do or do not for them right now. There is no try or halfway solution, as people want to see more Star Wars Battlefront.
EA won't make Star Wars Battlefront 3 because it doesn't have to now
Many players are calling for Star Wars Battlefront 3 to be developed now. But EA won't make it, and it doesn't need to do so now. Here's why!
