Summary
- Waze now shows traffic light icons in its mobile app, but availability is limited and inconsistent.
- The rollout seems to be gradual; some users saw icons briefly during tests, others still see none.
- Waze relies on crowdsourced data and might only add lights at major intersections; there's no official reporting tool.
After years of requests from dedicated users, Google-owned Waze has finally brought traffic lights to its mobile app. However, they're not available to every user yet.
The feature was briefly tested back in December, with users reporting that traffic lights sometimes appear but then just as quickly disappear. Now, it seems like traffic lights are showing up for more users, according to a recent Reddit post by yayoshorti. That said, given that Waze often pushes out updates very gradually, traffic light icons are still not available to all users. In the Reddit thread, some users say they've had the feature for a few weeks now, while others say they haven't seen a traffic light in their Waze app at all.
The fact that the app is crowdsourced also likely contributes to the slow rollout, since Waze's data is only as good as what users have reported (though there isn't an official way to report traffic lights). It's also possible that Waze is only adding traffic light icons at specific major intersections.
It's unclear if every traffic light will be marked with an icon
Other map platforms have offered this feature for years
For example, in my local area, a suburb of Toronto, Canada, there aren't any traffic lights on my Waze map. I did see a few traffic light icons a few months ago in the iOS version of Waze, though there weren't as many as there actually are in my city. In contrast, Google Maps and even Apple Maps have featured traffic lights for several years now, so it's odd that Waze hasn't made an effort to add them until recently.
With all of this in mind, keep an eye on your Waze map, because it's likely that at least a couple of traffic light icons should appear at some point soon. Waze is available on iOS, Android, as well as through CarPlay and Android Auto.
I still use Waze over Google Maps because its community reporting features are unmatched
Crowdsourced hazard reporting is the map app's killer feature.
