Summary
- Windows 11 will get a Feature Flags page to toggle experimental features without Vivetool.
- The Feature Flags page is itself experimental and not enabled yet.
- Vivetool may still be needed; Microsoft could keep very WIP features hidden from Feature Flags.
When Microsoft releases a new preview build, it announces the new features ready for testing in the changelog. However, there are some features the company doesn't announce but still make it into the preview build. These are usually experimental and work-in-progress tools that Microsoft doesn't want people stress-testing just yet, so it disables them and doesn't mention their existence.
Right now, it is possible to manually enable these hidden features using a third-party app called Vivetool. However, the app may soon become obsolete, as Microsoft is adding a "Feature Flags" page that lets you enable experimental features.
Windows 11 could soon let you skip its Microsoft Account sign-in requirement
The tech giant's big plan to improve Windows 11 doesn't currently include ditching its Microsoft account requirement — at least not yet
Windows 11's "Feature Flags" page will let you enable experimental features
Ironically, the page is an experimental feature right now
This discovery was made by PhantomOfEarth, who uses Vivetool to enable hidden tools in Windows 11 preview builds and reports back on everything Microsoft is working on. This time around, they've spotted something that may make their job a lot easier in the future: a "Feature Flags" page that will list everything Microsoft is working on, but hasn't enabled yet. You can use the page to manually enable these features and give them a go.
Funnily enough, the page for enabling experimental features is itself an experimental feature. PhantomOfEarth notes that it's not enabled yet, so until then, Vivetool is still very much needed. In fact, there's a chance that Microsoft will only list experimental features that are ready for general use and may still hide very WIP tools that only Vivetool can grab. We'll just have to wait and see how things shake out when the Feature Flags page releases.
