Summary

  • Microsoft will soon let you customize Windows 11's right-click menu, including adding, removing, and reordering items.
  • Faster context menus and simpler defaults aim to reduce clutter and speed access.
  • This is part of Windows 11's K2 strategy, which also includes a Control Panel refresh, the return of hte vertical Taskbar, and Start Menu fixes.

Windows 11's right-click menu has been more than a bit of a cluttered mess for some time, but thankfully, that could soon change.

Microsoft has confirmed plans to allow users to customize the context menu by adding and removing items. In a recent post on Twitter, Marcus Ash, the Design and Research Lead for Windows and Devices at Microsoft, confirmed plans to let users customize the right-click context menu. Additionally, Ash says that the right-click menu will load faster and that its default settings will be far more straightforward.

This is part of Microsoft's broader plan to improve Windows 11

K2-related updates are already hitting the operating system

We've known about Microsoft's sweeping K2 plan to improve Windows 11 for a few months, but this is the first time the tech giant has mentioned making changes to the context menu beyond plans to launch a split version of the feature back in November 2025. Other improvements coming to Windows 11 include a visual refresh for legacy features like the Control Panel and Device Manager, the long-requested vertical Taskbar, improvements to the Start Menu, and several other useful fixes.

As far as Windows 11 fixes go, while this one is pretty minor, I'm excited for it to arrive. The number of times I haven't been able to find the specific context menu item I'm looking for is countless, especially as I've been using Windows 11 more frequently over the past few months.

It's unclear when these improvements will arrive on Windows 11, but, like all of Microsoft's upcoming Windows 11 updates, they'll appear sometime over the next few months. On the plus side, Ash mentions in his tweet that "more will be shared" about Microsoft's approach to fixing the feature "soon."
