Summary
- Windows 11 update linked to odd HDD/SSD bug: drives may vanish when moving/downloading large files.
- Microsoft can't reproduce the issue or see telemetry spikes, and has no official support reports.
- If drives disappear, report via Support for Business or use Feedback Hub so Microsoft can investigate.
Windows 11 updates causing issues aren't a rare occurrence by any means; in fact, I'd be more surprised if they didn't happen. However, only a few can claim to be as weird as a strange HDD and SSD bug, which people say is affecting their drives but is proving tricky to reproduce, if it even exists. Well, if you've experienced something funny going on with your drives, Microsoft would very much like to hear about it so it can fix it.
Microsoft really wants people suffering HDD and SSD issues to step forward
If you missed it, we reported the other day on how Microsoft launched an investigation over claims that people's disk drives were acting really strangely after the last Windows 11 update. Essentially, if someone had an affected SSD or HDD model, which had 60% or more of used space, and you tried to move or download at least 50GB of data onto it, the drive would stop being recognised by Windows. Sometimes a restart would fix it, and sometimes it wouldn't.
There are just two problems: Microsoft can't replicate it, and the company hasn't received any official reports that the bug even exists. All we have so far are some claims scattered around the internet that the bug is affecting people.
Bleeping Computer spotted the following message from Microsoft:
We are actively working with our storage device partners to try to reproduce the issue. At the time of this publication, neither internal testing nor telemetry have identified an increase in disk failure or file corruption. In addition, Microsoft customer support teams haven't received reports of customers experiencing this issue. If you are experiencing this issue, please contact Support for Business or use the Feedback Hub to file a report."
So, if you've noticed your drives appearing and disappearing after the last Windows 11 update, please let the company know so it can squash the bug.
While we're on the topic of drives, how healthy are yours? They may not have any mechanical parts to them like HDDs, but they can still go wrong from time to time. If you don't remember the last time you gave your drive a well-deserved check-up, be sure to study up on how to check your SSD's health on a Windows PC for more information. Alternatively, you can use these ways to check how much life your SSD has left and read up on what happens if you don't catch your SSD's declining health in time.
