If your workflow has ever been slowed down or disrupted by Windows File Explorer's inability to organize your files adequately, then you might have considered replacing it. It is also possible that you've had to contend with its slow search function or have had difficulty renaming a large batch of files. The list of frustrations can seem endless. But what if you didn't have to ditch it entirely? Well, I have found a better solution using specialized add-ons. These small tools integrate with File Explorer, making it possible to add advanced features and turn it into a hub perfectly suited for your needs. Here are some of the tools that have helped me improve my workflow and actually enjoy using File Explorer.

Peek and PowerRename

Speed and convenience at your fingertips

Microsoft's PowerToys suite comprises many tools designed to increase users' productivity, including two important ones: Peek and PowerRename. These tools help to enhance your File Explorer experience. Peek brings an interesting “quick look” feature to Windows. With Peek, you can quickly preview the content of a file, be it a PDF, an image, a Markdown document, or a snippet of code. Simply select the file and press CTRL + Spacebar. This obviates the need to open numerous large files just to view their content, saving precious time.

PowerRename, on the other hand, is more efficient for renaming a large number of files. While File Explorer can perform basic batch renaming by applying sequential naming to a series of files, PowerRename takes it a step further. For instance, it offers a dialog box where you can find and replace text, allowing you to simultaneously replace specific words or phrases across multiple files with different extensions. You also get to instantly see a preview of your new file names before applying the changes. This tool is great for renaming tasks such as movies, vacation photos, or documents without downloading another app. All you need to do is highlight the files, right-click, locate the PowerRename, and take it from there.

TeraCopy

Overcome file transfer frustration

One of the biggest challenges with the default File Explorer is that a corrupt file or even a network issue can completely halt a large file transfer, leaving you to restart the process and manually determine what has already been transferred. TeraCopy completely eases this worry. It's a tool that helps to copy and transfer files faster, but more importantly, it gives you way more control. You can pause and resume the transfer whenever you feel like doing so.

Additionally, it's designed to handle errors gracefully. If it encounters a corrupted file during the transfer process, it won't simply stop. It will skip the bad file and continue the rest of the transfer. Additionally, it features a “verify” function that allows you to double-check that the files you copied are an exact match with the originals. Ultimately, you will receive a comprehensive report detailing the entire process. If you regularly deal with a lot of data, I assure you that the peace of mind that comes with using TeraCopy is a huge relief.

Listary

Easy navigation and access

Windows' built-in search feature can be frustrating. It's often slow and doesn't bring up what you're looking for. Listary is a tool that works directly within File Explorer, designed to simplify file searching. It offers instant and real-time results. You can simply open any folder and start typing, and as you do, Listary typically filters the folder, directing you directly to the specific file or document you're searching for.

And it doesn't stop there. You can double-tap the Ctrl key to bring up the command bar. From this spot, you can do more than just find files; you can run your favorite apps, perform web searches, and even execute commands. This essentially turns File Explorer into a central hub for all your desktop activities. The speed with which it carries out these tasks makes it a useful addition, as it eliminates the sometimes painful waiting time for the default search tool to complete a search.

DropIt

The smart way to automate and organize your files

Do you sometimes feel that your downloads folder is a chaotic mess of files? Manually sorting through everything could be quite boring and even tedious. That's where DropIt comes in. It's an app that turns this tedious process into a single, drag-and-drop. You simply set up some rules and then just drag your files to a floating icon on your desktop.

DropIt automatically sorts and organizes them for you based on the rules you've created. For example, you can set up a rule that automatically moves all your files with the .jpg extension into your "Pictures" folder or all .pdf files to your "Documents" folder. In addition to sorting files, it can automatically carry out a wide range of actions such as zipping, renaming, or even uploading them to an FTP server. All you have to do is set up a few simple rules, and then watch as your digital space is organized with minimal hassle.

DropIt

You don't have to abandon File Explorer

It's often the case that when a tool is not working for you, the first instinct is to ditch it and find an alternative. However, searching for a third-party application to replace it can be a hassle, often accompanied by a steep learning curve or additional costs. While some of these add-ons certainly have limitations and aren't entirely free, they can help you address your complaints and enhance your workflow without leaving the Windows ecosystem.
