Like most people, I open Gemini or Google Search, ask my questions, and move on without thinking too much about it. It works, but it makes you miss out on all the things Gemini is actually good at. After spending a lot of time testing AI tools for research and everyday tasks, it became clear that Gemini is far more useful when you put intention and effort into your requests, and also actually use some of the features hiding in plain sight.
Once I started using it this way, it became more of a productivity tool than just an AI chatbot. Here are the things I do that have made a big difference…
Reframing searches instead of restarting them
The simplest yet most overlooked aspect of Google Search
Google Search is different from Gemini, but I like to think of it as Gemini wearing a different outfit because it’s all powered by the same underlying model. Many people seem to use Search like it’s a reset button every time, and start a completely new query when the answer isn’t obvious at first. But Google has had AI Mode for a year now, which directs you to a Gemini-powered interface for deeper search. So instead of abandoning your search or starting over, you can keep refining it in the same thread.
AI Mode is designed for complex queries that would normally take multiple searches to figure out, and it keeps running searches in the background to pull together more relevant results. Asking follow-up questions will narrow the scope and clarify confusing info. This is also a great low-commitment entry point to AI without jumping into a full chatbot setup - it lets you get the same benefits from Gemini’s power without fully switching your workflow to AI.
Using files to extend the context
Even the free version gives you plenty to work with
A big part people overlook with Gemini is how useful file uploads can be. There’s no need to copy-paste large chunks of text into your prompts, even if you’re using the free tier. Gemini can read a wide range of documents and media files directly, which basically turns those files into memory for your chat session. And you can take full advantage of Gemini’s RAG abilities and chat with your own documents.
Gemini will automatically reference any files you have in a chat, but it does work better when you give it a little nudge to point it at specific files. This also means you shouldn’t upload files that are irrelevant to the chat at large, because they can skew the results. The free tier gives me 10 document and image uploads per prompt with a cap of 100MB per file, 10 videos per prompt at 2GB per video, and one audio per prompt capped at 100MB. This is plenty for me as a casual user.
Using Guided Learning
Turn any topic into an interactive tutorial
Gemini introduced a Guided Learning feature that moves beyond regular chats and quick answers. It basically turns the session into an interactive tutorial, walking you through the topic step by step and letting you check your own understanding. Guided Learning in Gemini is powered by LearnLM, which is a specialized collection of models created by Google for learning and education.
For example, asking Gemini about any topic without Guided Learning would give me a pretty standard knowledge dump of what it is, assuming I understand what it’s saying, and provide a few links to websites and articles at the bottom.
Guided Learning, on the other hand, takes a much more interactive approach and treats me like a student. It asks for an overview of my understanding or skill level so it can build a proper learning roadmap. Then it waits for my input and will select the appropriate module for my level, it will ask me to explain concepts back to it, and it will often embed YouTube tutorials, generate quizzes, or generate diagrams. It’s like having a smart textbook that constantly adapts to your level of understanding.
Setting up Gems
Customized assistance
A Gemini feature I feel like doesn’t get talked about enough is Gems. These are little custom assistants that store a prompt, format, tone, persona, and let you upload reusable files. You can use them for repetitive tasks or anything that needs consistent behavior, since they’re tailored specifically to the types of questions you ask.
Because Gems live right in the Gemini interface, you can build a custom library of behaviors that fit your personal use cases, without needing external tools or third-party prompt managers. And the best part is that they’re available to all free tier users. It’s the perfect way to keep your research or work consistent or save time with boring, repetitive tasks.
Making Gemini work for you
Gemini is a platform that rewards thoughtful use. From leveraging files as extended memory to Guided Learning and Gems, each of these methods and features helps you work smarter, not harder. Setting them up might take a few minutes, but the payoff is worth it.
