The 1,200 page book, compiled by Dr. Jari Leskinen and Lieutenant-Colonel Antti Juutilainen, is said to provide new information and interpretations of Finland's role in the latter part of World War II. For instance, in addition to describing fighting scenes, the book depicts other events on the front as well.
Finnish forensic dentist Helena Ranta, renowned for her work in world crisis areas, chose this year's winner from a shortlist compiled by a jury. The prize is worth 26,000 euros, the same as the Finlandia prize for fiction.
Ranta praised the book for its depth and the detailed information it provided, as well as for its style. She said the book challenges people to reconsider previously accepted perceptions.
