The Ministry wants to ensure that the right to use force such as firing weapons is adequately determined in order to prevent error.

In practice, the aim is to provide guidelines in what situations a peacekeeper would have the right to use arms.

The Ministry of Defence says current guidelines until now have been adequate for Finnish participation in military operations, reports the daily Turun Sanomat. So far, no scenario has been reported where current practice was deemed inadequate.

Currently Finnish peacekeepers are, for example, involved in the ISAF force in Afghanistan. Revised guidelines are expected to be ready by next autumn.
