At this time, it seems most likely that the small plane crash in Espoo on Saturday was caused by a stall, when the plane can not make enough lift to keep the aircraft in level flight, says Chief Inspector Janne Saari of the West Uusimaa Police Department.

“We still aren’t sure if the flight stall was the result of a pilot error or a aircraft malfunction,” says Saari.

The police are in possession of video taken by a witness to the crash that shows the moments leading up to the accident, before the plane tipped on its side and fell into the sea.

“The video allows us to form a good understanding of what was happening in those last few moments  - before things started to go wrong.”

Inspector Saari says the investigating team will interview more eyewitnesses on Sunday, analyse the video material and pull all of the data together with the Safety Investigation Authority. Investigation will continue into next week.

For example, it is still not known if the 38-year-old man from Tampere who died in the crash was a very experienced pilot.
