Helsinki District Court has remanded into custody three men suspected of involvement in the activities of a terrorist group.

The three defendants — all believed to be aged in their 30s — were detained by police last Tuesday and remanded on Friday.

Mikko Salminen, a detective inspector with the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), confirmed to Yle that the suspects were picked up in Helsinki following an operation that also involved the Finnish Security and Intelligence Service (Supo).

"We suspect that the case is linked to the involvement of a radical Islamist international terrorist group. We suspect it is linked to the activities of Isis," Salminen said.

He added that the suspects are not Finnish citizens, but they reside in Finland.

"The investigation has not revealed any evidence of the threat of a terrorist attack against Finland," Salminen said.

According to Yle's current information, the suspected offences are understood to have taken place in Helsinki between January 2023 and June 2024.

Yle also contacted one of the defendant's lawyers, but he declined to answer any questions about the case.

"I have nothing to say here. If I take a position on this, I would have to shed light on this case, and I don't want to do that," lawyer Petteri Kouhia said.

The court set a deadline of January for the prosecution to file charges.
