Finnish President Alexander Stubb will make official visits to Jordan and Egypt over the next several days, according to the president's office.

His two-day visit to Jordan starts on Sunday, Stubb will meet with King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein in Amman, Jordan. Their planned discussion topics include the situation in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz and the Middle East, the office said.

"Other topics on the agenda are bilateral relations between Finland and Jordan, Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine and current global challenges," the office said in a press release. On Monday, Stubb is scheduled to meet with Jordan's Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and other political figures.

Then, on Tuesday, President Stubb will make an official two-day visit to Egypt, where he is set to meet with the country's president, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

"The presidents will discuss the situation in Iran, the Strait of Hormuz, Gaza and the broader Middle East. The topics of the meeting include bilateral relations between Finland and Egypt, Russia’s illegal war of aggression against Ukraine, transatlantic relations and the global order," the president's office explained in a separate release.

Stubb will also meet with Egyptian Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and the Grand Imam of al-Azhar, Ahmed El-Tayeb. The president is scheduled to speak at a Finland-Egypt business forum on "the prospects of geopolitics and economy".

Strait of Hormuz situation

Stubb met with Finland's Ministerial Committee on Foreign and Security Policy on Friday to discuss the situation in Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, among other topics.

The strait is a key passage for about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, but since the US and Israel began attacking Iran in late Februrary, the waterway has been effectively closed, causing global fuel prices to jump.

However, oil prices have since dropped after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz would be open to commercial vessels during an ongoing ceasefire, according to the BBC and other news outlets.

The public broadcaster noted that during the closure, the price of Brent crude oil hit a peak of 119 US dollars per barrel. Before the conflict Brent crude oil was trading at less than 70 US dollars a barrel, while on Friday the price stood at around 92 dollars.

Stubb was among leaders from more than 50 countries who attended an international summit about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz on Friday.

After the summit, France and the UK — who arranged the meeting — issued a statement vowing to help secure the strait once a ceasefire is reached.

"We expressed our strong support for a comprehensive diplomatic settlement to the conflict through negotiations. Diplomacy must prevail," France and the UK's joint statement read.

On Friday afternoon, Stubb thanked France and the UK for arranging the summit in a social media post.

"Finland stands ready to work on a solution that brings stability to the region and respects international law. We welcome Iran’s announcement on opening the Strait. Lasting solutions require diplomacy,” part of Stubb's post on X read.

On Friday US President Donald Trump said on social media that negotiations with Iran would continue over the weekend, noting that a US naval blockade of Iran's ports would continue until "the transaction with Iran is 100% complete," the BBC reported.

The broadcaster noted on Saturday morning that an Iranian official said the Strait of Hormuz would not remain open if the US port blockade continued.

At around midday Finnish time, it was reported that Iran claimed it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again, but that ships were still being seen moving in the area.

Finland's first presidential visit to Jordan was made in 2010 by Tarja Halonen, according to the president's office. Halonen was also the most recent Finnish president to make an official visit to Egypt, in 2009.
