Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) is taking part in the European Political Community (EPC) meeting in the Armenian capital Yerevan.

He is to meet privately with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky along with the prime ministers of Britain, Norway and the Czech Republic.

The meeting between Orpo and Zelenskyy was announced by Zelensky’s office and confirmed to Yle by State Secretary for EU Affairs Minna Kivimäki. The timing of the meeting has not been announced.

Last week Orpo called for Ukraine joining the EU "as quickly as possible".

On Sunday morning, a possible Ukrainian drone is suspected of violating Finnish airspace during an attack on the large nearby Russian oil port of Primorsk.

Canada, the EU and 20 other countries

On Sunday evening, the conference participants will gather for dinner hosted by Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan ahead of Monday’s meetings.

The summit is co-chaired by European Council President António Costa and Armenian PM Nikol Pashinyan.

Nearly 50 heads of state and government are taking part in the eighth meeting of the EPC, including the first time the leader of a non-European country: Canadian PM Mark Carney.

The EPC includes the 27 EU member states as well as 20 other countries, from Turkey to Kosovo to Iceland. It was launched in 2022 as an intergovernmental forum for political and strategic discussions following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The EPC nations represent close to 700 million people and a quarter of the world's GDP.
