Sari Ahtiainen and Kai Aro suspected there was a thief at work in the vicinity of their summer cottage, located near the city of Mikkeli in eastern Finland.

"We had cut down an aspen tree, and the wood kept disappearing from the pile. We wondered what was going on," Ahtiainen told Yle.

The couple installed a surveillance camera in the yard of the property to catch the culprit — and it wasn't long before the thief struck again.

The surveillance footage revealed that, during the darkest hours of the night, a beaver emerged from the nearby lake and started dragging chopped wood away.

"It was quite an endearing and large creature. I didn't know that beavers were that chubby," Ahtiainen said.

The beaver managed to take about 10 pieces of wood to the lake over the course of several weeks. Some of the wood was left floating in the lake, while other sections had been gnawed on the shore.

From this evidence, the couple concluded that the beaver wasn't building a dam, but instead eating the stockpile.

"The next night, after we had better secured the piles during the day, it actually walked around there, and after that it hasn't come back. Apparently it concluded that this feeding spot is now closed – the restaurant is shut," Ahtiainen laughed.

They further suspect that the beaver was responsible for the disappearance of parts of deciduous trees that were previously felled near the property.

"The snack bar was there. A delicious buffet for it," Ahtiainen added.
