It was an introduction to the second series, there's a lot left unsaid and undone, but it's a nice watch with fantasy and folklore... and bishie overkill ;-)
Now i have to wait to see what really is going on :-(

This is a nice show - nothing fantastic, but since the "Japanese mythology" genre isn't used a lot these days, it's certainly good for a change.

Hakkenden was a landmark of 19th century japanese litterature, a dark epic tales that spread over a hundread volume. It inspired 3 animated version. The classical 1993 OVA serie, a mature seinen affaire close to the original story portrait with dynamic animation, titanest storytelling and bloody battle. In 1999 a shounen sci-fi version was made of the story (witch I had yet to see) Finally we got the new installement Hakkenden: Touhou Hakken Ibun based on the shoujo manga of Miyuki ABE written some years ago. After seen this first season (second part will comme in summer this year), I gotta admit it's quite an enjoyable ride.

Animation:
Relatively good production value. The background are detailled, the character design appelling and even thought there isn't that much visual effect involved, the animation is respectable in motion and fluidity for a tv serie.

Sound:
Catchy Opening and soothing Eding theme are well executed. The BGM fit even thought there not highly memorable. Also the seiyuu dose a great job to bring life into all of this bishonen. Nothing worth mentionning about sound effect.

Story:
Interesting setting in a alternative Taishou Japan. The pace of the story and the presentation of even goes smoothly. They not try to incorporate to numerous subplot and it's remains pretty straighfoward without ever been simplistic. However it's a good thing a second season is planned this summer as many question would have been left unanswred. Also, even if the serie remain dramatic most of the time, pop once in awhile in awkard way ala Fushigi Yuugi.

Character:
Devellopment is involved here for sure. We get to discover the background of many of them and the interraction are set in realistic way usually.

Value and enjoyment:
Considering how rare quality shoujo is in recent years it's a define recommended watch. I would not said it will be classic of the fantasy shoujo like Fushigi Yuugi or Juuni Kokki but it show enought conviction and quality in its execution to be worth watching without a doubt.
