Kihara Hirokatsu is a Japanese novelist and former production manager. He was born in Amagasaki, Hyogo Prefecture, and graduated from Osaka University of Arts in 1982. In 1983 he joined studio
Top Craft and remained in the company when it became
Studio Ghibli. He took part in creation of
Laputa: Castle in the Sky,
My Neighbor Totoro and
Kiki's Delivery Service.
In 1990 he left the studio and published his first and most famous ghost stories anthology called
Shin Mimi Bukuro (新・耳・袋), known as
Tales of Terror in English. The anthology became a bestseller and spawned a series of films and other franchise products. Since then, Kihara has written other popular series of books featuring ghost stories. He is often considered to be the pioneer of modern Japanese horror and one of the people responsible for the J-horror boom in Japan and abroad.
