"Awful!" - that was the first reaction of the people who visited the presentation when they saw "The Ukrainian Potential"

The sculptor stressed that he was inspired to create this work by his recent travelling around Ukraine. "I was shocked of what I saw: ruins, poverty, a total decay. However on TV the politicians tell us that everything is fine and will be even better. But Ukraine is different. Now you will see the way it looks."

help becomes heist
a sick sort of soothing
removal at length
pretentious and brooding

ride inside blue
the shore is approaching
sensation returns
entangled in ocean

reach: empty air
expand and contract
blurred into vision
muscles relax

Mykola Shmatko and his sculpture titled "Among Emperors"

LUHANSK, Ukraine -- A sculptor in the eastern Ukrainian city of Luhansk has unveiled a bronze bust of President Viktor Yanukovych titled "," RFE/RL's Ukrainian Service reports.

Mykola Shmatko told journalists at the presentation on August 3 that he decided on the title because he sees Yanukovych as one in a series of personalities that includes Roman Emperor Caligula and Alexander the Great.

America

  • May. 10th, 2010 at 11:27 PM
Constructive criticism appreciated and greatly desired. It's a longish piece (but not short-story length), so I really appreciate anyone taking the time to read through it and to comment.

My America

I.

We had been seeing each other around forever.  Every time I even thought about a county fair, I'd catch a glimpse of America.  Walking down the street, driving in the van, getting ice cream, all sorts of things.  America attracted me, but I never thought we had a chance together.  It always seemed like we were just too different, too similar, too at odds with each other.  America was just another hopeless dream.  Something left over from reading too much Jack Kerouac.

Then I bought a truck.  An old truck.  A truck with a lot of rust and one side painted black and the other red.  I named him Whitman and christened him with stickers and said, "This is a good truck."  Whitman - a Ford Ranger, an old one. 1988.  Sometimes I wonder if America and I would have met if it had been a Dodge or a Subaru station wagon.  America says of course we would have, but I'm not so sure.  America is more judgemental than anyone (including America) would like to think.  All the same, it happened.
