Achaicus is a figure mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible, specifically in the Apostle Paul's First Epistle to the Corinthians. His name, of Greek origin, suggests a connection to the region of Achaia, a province in southern Greece. Achaicus is recognized for his role in the early Christian church and his association with the Apostle Paul.
Biblical Reference:Achaicus is mentioned in
1 Corinthians 16:17-18 : "I am glad that Stephanas, Fortunatus, and Achaicus have arrived, because they have supplied what was lacking from you. For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well. Show your appreciation, therefore, to such men."
Context and Role:Achaicus, along with Stephanas and Fortunatus, is noted for his visit to Paul. This visit is significant as it provided Paul with much-needed support and encouragement during his ministry. The mention of these three individuals highlights their importance in the Corinthian church and their dedication to the work of the Gospel.
The passage suggests that Achaicus, along with his companions, brought news or resources from the Corinthian church to Paul, thereby "supplying what was lacking." This indicates that Achaicus played a crucial role in maintaining the connection between Paul and the Corinthian believers, ensuring that the needs of the apostle were met and that the church remained informed and encouraged.
Character and Contribution:Achaicus is commended by Paul for refreshing his spirit, which implies that he was a source of comfort and strength to the apostle. This commendation reflects Achaicus's character as a devoted and faithful servant of Christ, willing to travel and serve the needs of the early church leaders.
Paul's instruction to the Corinthians to "show your appreciation" to Achaicus and his companions underscores the value of their service and the respect they commanded within the Christian community. It serves as an exhortation to the church to honor those who labor for the Gospel and contribute to the spiritual well-being of others.
Significance in Early Christianity:The mention of Achaicus, though brief, provides insight into the interconnectedness of the early Christian communities and the vital role played by individuals who supported the apostles. Achaicus's actions exemplify the spirit of cooperation and mutual support that was essential for the spread of Christianity in the first century.
His presence in the biblical narrative, though limited to a single mention, highlights the importance of lay members in the church who, through their dedication and service, contributed significantly to the mission of the early church. Achaicus stands as a testament to the impact that faithful believers can have in advancing the cause of Christ and supporting His messengers.

ACHAICUSa-ka'-i-kus (Achaikos, "belonging to Achaia"): A name honorably conferred upon L. Mummius, conqueror of Corinth and Achaia (compare CORINTH). Achaicus was one of the leaders of the Corinthian church (to be inferred from 1 Corinthians 16:15) who, visiting Paul at Ephesus with Stephanas and Fortunatus, greatly relieved the Apostle's anxiety for the Corinthian church (compare 1 Corinthians 5:1). Paul admonishes the members of the Cor church to submit to their authority (compare 1 Thessalonians 5:12) and to acknowledge their work (1 Corinthians 16:15).
