Who was Noah?Noah was a man who lived a long time ago, and he is a very important person in the Bible. He was the son of Lamech and the grandson of Methuselah, who is known for living the longest in the Bible. Noah was a righteous man, which means he tried to do what was right and follow God. The Bible says, "Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his generation; Noah walked with God" (
Genesis 6:9).
Why did God ask Noah to build an ark?During Noah's time, the world was filled with people who were doing bad things and not listening to God. God was very sad about this and decided to send a great flood to clean the earth. But because Noah was a good man who loved God, God wanted to save him and his family. God told Noah to build a big boat called an ark. The Bible says, "So God said to Noah, 'I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. Behold, I will destroy them along with the earth. Make for yourself an ark of gopher wood; make rooms in the ark and coat it with pitch inside and out'" (
Genesis 6:13-14).
What was the ark like? The ark was a huge boat! God gave Noah specific instructions on how to build it. It was to be 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. A cubit is an ancient measurement, and it is about the length of a man's arm from the elbow to the tip of the fingers. The ark had three decks and a door on the side. It was made to float and keep everyone inside safe from the floodwaters.
Who went on the ark?God told Noah to bring his family onto the ark. This included Noah, his wife, his three sons—Shem, Ham, and Japheth—and their wives. God also instructed Noah to bring animals onto the ark. He said, "You are to bring into the ark two of every living creature, male and female, to keep them alive with you" (
Genesis 6:19). This meant Noah had to bring pairs of all kinds of animals, birds, and even creeping things!
What happened during the flood?Once Noah, his family, and all the animals were safely inside the ark, God shut the door. Then it began to rain. It rained for 40 days and 40 nights, and the whole earth was covered with water. The Bible says, "The waters prevailed upon the earth for 150 days" (
Genesis 7:24). But Noah and everyone in the ark were safe because they obeyed God.
What happened after the flood? After the floodwaters went down, the ark came to rest on the mountains of Ararat. God told Noah it was safe to come out of the ark. Noah built an altar and thanked God for keeping them safe. God made a promise to Noah and all living creatures that He would never again destroy the earth with a flood. As a sign of this promise, God placed a rainbow in the sky. The Bible says, "I have set My rainbow in the clouds, and it will be a sign of the covenant between Me and the earth" (
Genesis 9:13).
Why is Noah's account important?Noah's account teaches us about obedience and faith. Noah listened to God and did what He asked, even when it seemed difficult. Because of his faithfulness, God saved Noah and his family. The account also reminds us of God's promises and His love for all creation.
