Early Articles

David published between 14 and 18 articles before he headed up the Ziff-Davis journals and then the ZATZ magazines. So far, we’ve managed to locate ten individual articles and they are included in the bibliography below. Of special note is David’s very first article, published in Boys’ Life when he was sixteen.

"MessagePad 2000: New Newton Exceeds Expectations," TidBITS, May 1997. You can read this article by clicking here.

"Artificial Intelligence as a systems component," Computer Design, February 1986.

"Wedding 4.2BSD and System V," Systems and Software, July 1984.

"Micronix," Microsystems Magazine, September 1983.

"Using the UNIX Shell Interactively," Programmers’ Guide to UNIX, 1983.

"Programming the UNIX Shell," Programmers’ Guide to UNIX, 1983.

"The C Programming Language," Programmers’ Guide to CP/M, 1983.

"Introduction to the C Programming Language," Microsystems Magazine, November/December 1981, January/February 1982.

"Serial vs. Parallel," Creative Computing Magazine, 1979.

"A Leather Neckerchief Slide," Boys’ Life, September 1977, with Glenn Wagner

David published his first article at 16. The article showcases a perfect example of how supportive parents can help a child grow.

Back in 1977, David’s parents were willing to encourage him and drive him the few hours south to Boy Scout headquarters (publishers of Boys Life). With the help of an associate editor, David’s first article was published – and the rest is history.

30+ years, 700+ articles, a few books, and a Pulitzer Prize candidacy later, David is a well known and respected author and editor. While we’ll never know if he’d have gone as far without his parents’ support, we know their support helped get him a start in an industry and career where not only has he gotten a lot of value, he’s returned the favor to all of his constituencies many times over.

And yes, David’s also an Eagle Scout. He earned that at 14.
