Le bilinguisme peut également se référer à la direction de recherche correspondante qui étudie le phénomène lui-même. Le bilinguisme est une forme de multilinguisme. Le bilinguisme, le multilinguisme et le polyglossy peuvent tous être utilisés comme références au même phénomène. Mit Bilingualismus oder Zweisprachigkeit wird das Phänomen bezeichnet, zwei Sprachen zu sprechen oder zu verstehen. Die Bezeichnung kann sich sowohl auf Einzelpersonen als auch auf ganze Gesellschaften beziehen . Bilingualismus kann ebenso die entsprechende Forschungsrichtung bezeichnen, die das Phänomen selbst untersucht. Zweisprachigkeit ist eine Form des Mehrsprachigkeit.
