Ani est un site médiéval médiévalement situé dans la province turque de Kars, près de la frontière avec l'Arménie. Entre 961 et 1045, c'était la capitale du royaume arménien médiéval qui couvrait une grande partie de l'Arménie actuelle et de l'est de la Turquie. La ville est située sur un site triangulaire, visuellement dramatique et naturellement défensive, protégée sur son côté est par le ravin de la rivière Akhurian et sur son côté ouest par la vallée de Bostanlar ou Tzaghkotzadzor. L'Akhurian est une branche de la rivière Araks et fait partie de la frontière actuelle entre la Turquie et l'Arménie. Appelée «La ville des 1001 églises», Ani se trouvait sur diverses routes commerciales et ses nombreux édifices, palais et fortifications religieuses faisaient partie des structures technologiquement et artistiquement avancées au monde. Au sommet, Ani avait une population de 100 000 à 200 000 habitants et était le rival de Constantinople, Bagdad et Damas. Longtemps connue pour sa splendeur et sa magnificence, Ani a été abandonnée et largement oubliée suite au séisme de 1319. Ani is a ruined medieval Armenian city-site situated in the Turkish province of Kars, near the border with Armenia. Between 961 and 1045 it was the capital of the medieval Armenian Kingdom that covered much of present day Armenia and eastern Turkey. The city is located on a triangular site, visually dramatic and naturally defensive, protected on its eastern side by the ravine of the Akhurian River and on its western side by the Bostanlar or Tzaghkotzadzor valley. The Akhurian is a branch of the Araks River and forms part of the current border between Turkey and Armenia. Called the "City of 1001 Churches," Ani stood on various trade routes and its many religious buildings, palaces, and fortifications were amongst the most technically and artistically advanced structures in the world. At its height, Ani had a population of 100,000–200,000 people and was the rival of Constantinople, Baghdad and Damascus. Long ago renowned for its splendor and magnificence, Ani was abandoned and largely forgotten following the earthquake of 1319.
