L'aphasie est une perturbation de la compréhension et de l'expression du langage causé par un dysfonctionnement dans le cerveau. Cette classe de troubles du langage varie de la difficulté à se souvenir des mots à perdre la capacité de parler, de lire ou d'écrire. Cela affecte également le langage visuel tel que la langue des signes. L'aphasie est généralement causée par des lésions cérébrales, le plus souvent causées par un AVC. Les lésions cérébrales liées à l'aphasie peuvent également être causées par d'autres maladies du cerveau, y compris le cancer, l'épilepsie et la maladie d'Alzheimer. Les troubles de l'aphasie aiguë se développent généralement rapidement en raison d'une blessure à la tête ou d'un accident vasculaire cérébral, et des formes progressives d'aphasie se développent lentement à partir d'une tumeur cérébrale, d'une infection ou d'une démence. Aphasia is a disturbance of the comprehension and expression of language caused by dysfunction in the brain. This class of language disorder ranges from having difficulty remembering words to losing the ability to speak, read, or write. This also affects visual language such as sign language. Aphasia is usually caused by brain damage, most commonly caused by stroke. Brain damage linked to aphasia can also be caused by other brain diseases, including cancer, epilepsy and Alzheimer's disease. Acute aphasia disorders usually develop quickly as a result of head injury or stroke, and progressive forms of aphasia develop slowly from a brain tumor, infection, or dementia. The area and extent of brain damage or atrophy will determine the type of aphasia and its symptoms. Aphasia types include expressive aphasia, receptive aphasia, conduction aphasia, anomic aphasia, global aphasia, primary progressive aphasias and many others. Medical evaluations for the disorder range from clinical screenings by a neurologist to extensive tests by a speech-language pathologist or neuropsychologist.
