Armorica ou Aremorica est le nom donné dans les temps anciens à la partie de la Gaule entre les rivières de la Seine et de la Loire, qui comprend la péninsule de Bretagne, s'étendant vers l'intérieur jusqu'à un point indéterminé et en bas de la côte atlantique. Le toponyme est basé sur la phrase gauloise est-mori "sur / en mer", transformé en nom de lieu gaulois Aremorica (* are-mor-ika) "Place par la mer". Le suffixe - a été utilisé pour la première fois pour créer des formes adjectives et ensuite, des noms (voir régions comme Pays d'Ouche \u0026 lt; Utica, Perche \u0026 lt; Pertica). La désignation originale était vague, y compris une grande partie de ce qui est devenu la Normandie au 10ème siècle et, dans certaines interprétations, toute la côte jusqu'à la Garonne. Plus tard, le terme est restreint à la Bretagne. En breton (qui appartient à la branche Brythonic des langues cellulaires insulaires, avec le gallois et le cornouailles), "on sea" est war vor (Welsh ar y môr), bien que la forme ancienne arvor soit utilisée pour désigner les régions côtières de Bretagne, contrairement à l'argoad (ar "on / at", coad "forêt") pour les régions intérieures. Armorica or Aremorica is the name given in ancient times to the part of Gaul between the Seine and Loire rivers, that includes the Brittany peninsula, extending inland to an indeterminate point and down the Atlantic coast. The toponym is based on the Gaulish phrase are-mori "on/at sea", made into the Gaulish place name Aremorica (*are-mor-ika ) "Place by the Sea". The suffix -ika was first used to create adjectival forms and then, names (See regions as Pays d'Ouche < Utica, Perche < Pertica ). The original designation was vague, including a large part of what became Normandy in the 10th century and, in some interpretations, the whole of the coast down to the Garonne river. Later, the term became restricted to Brittany. In Breton (which belongs to the Brythonic branch of the Insular Celtic languages, along with Welsh and Cornish), "on sea" is war vor (Welsh ar y môr), though the older form arvor is used to refer to the coastal regions of Brittany, in contrast to argoad (ar "on/at", coad "forest" ) for the inland regions.
