Le tiroir écrit les différents détails, y compris le montant monétaire, la date et le bénéficiaire du chèque, et le signe, en ordonnant à leur banque, appelée le tirage, de payer à cette personne ou à la compagnie le montant indiqué. Les chèques sont un type de lettre de change et ont été développés comme moyen d'effectuer des paiements sans avoir à transporter d'importantes sommes d'argent.
