Les chauves-souris sont des mammifères de l'ordre des Chiroptera dont les membres antérieurs forment des ailes palmées, ce qui en fait les seuls mammifères naturellement capables d'un vol vrai et soutenu. En revanche, d'autres mammifères disant qu'ils volent, comme les écureuils volants, les canyons de glisse et les colugos, ne peuvent glisser que pour de courtes distances. Les chauves-souris ne voient pas leurs avant-gardes entières, comme les oiseaux, mais battent leurs chiffres écartés, très longs et recouverts d'une mince membrane ou d'un patagium. Les chauves-souris sont le deuxième plus grand nombre de mammifères, représentant environ 20% de toutes les espèces de mammifères classées dans le monde, avec environ 1 240 espèces de chauves-souris divisées en deux sous-catégories: les mégabats moins spécialisés et largement consommant des fruits, ou les renards volants, et les spécialistes hautement spécialisés et écolotiques Microbats. Environ 70% des espèces de chauves-souris sont des insectivores. La plupart du reste sont des frugivores ou des mangeurs de fruits. Certaines espèces, comme la chauve-souris qui mangent des poissons, se nourrissent d'animaux autres que les insectes, les chauves-souris vampires étant hématophages ou se nourrissent de sang. By contrast, other mammals said to fly, such as flying squirrels, gliding possums, and colugos, can only glide for short distances. Bats do not flap their entire forelimbs, as birds do, but instead flap their spread-out digits, which are very long and covered with a thin membrane or patagium. Bats are the second largest order of mammals, representing about 20% of all classified mammal species worldwide, with about 1,240 bat species divided into two suborders: the less specialized and largely fruit-eating megabats, or flying foxes, and the highly specialized and echolocating microbats. About 70% of bat species are insectivores. Most of the rest are frugivores, or fruit eaters. A few species, such as the fish-eating bat, feed from animals other than insects, with the vampire bats being hematophagous, or feeding on blood. Bats are present throughout most of the world, performing vital ecological roles of pollinating flowers and dispersing fruit seeds.
