La loyauté est la fidélité ou le dévouement à une personne, un pays, un groupe ou une cause. Il existe de nombreux aspects de la loyauté. John Kleinig, professeur de philosophie à l'Université de la ville de New York, constate qu'au fil des années, l'idée a été traitée par des écrivains d'Eschyle à travers John Galsworthy à Joseph Conrad, par des psychologues, des psychiatres, des sociologues, des savants de la religion, des économistes politiques, des savants de Les entreprises et le marketing, et surtout les théoriciens politiques, qui s'occupent de loyauté et de patriotisme. En tant que concept philosophique, la loyauté n'a pas été traitée par les philosophes avant l'œuvre de Josiah Royce, la «grande exception» dans les mots de Kleinig. John Ladd, professeur de Philosophie à l'Université Brown, écrit dans l'encyclopédie Macmillan de Philosophie en 1967, constate qu'à cette époque, le sujet avait reçu «peu d'attention dans la littérature philosophique». Il a attribué aux associations «odieuses» que le sujet avait avec le nationalisme, y compris le nationalisme du nazisme et la métaphysique de l'idéalisme qu'il qualifiait de «obsolète». Loyalty is faithfulness or a devotion to a person, country, group, or cause. There are many aspects to loyalty. John Kleinig, professor of Philosophy at City University of New York, observes that over the years the idea has been treated by writers from Aeschylus through John Galsworthy to Joseph Conrad, by psychologists, psychiatrists, sociologists, scholars of religion, political economists, scholars of business and marketing, and — most particularly — by political theorists, who deal with it in terms of loyalty oaths and patriotism. As a philosophical concept, loyalty was largely untreated by philosophers until the work of Josiah Royce, the "grand exception" in Kleinig's words. John Ladd, professor of Philosophy at Brown University writing in the Macmillan Encyclopaedia of Philosophy in 1967, observes that by that time the subject had received "scant attention in philosophical literature". This he attributed to "odious" associations that the subject had with nationalism, including the nationalism of Nazism, and with the metaphysics of idealism, which he characterized as "obsolete".
