Doublethink est l'acte des personnes ordinaires qui acceptent simultanément deux croyances mutuellement contradictoires comme étant correct, souvent dans des contextes sociaux distincts. Doublethink est lié à, mais diffère, hypocrisie et neutralité. Un peu apparenté, mais presque le contraire, c'est la dissonance cognitive, où les croyances contradictoires provoquent un conflit dans l'esprit. Doublethink est remarquable en raison d'un manque de dissonance cognitive - donc la personne ignore complètement tout conflit ou contradiction. In the novel, its origin within the typical citizen is unclear; while it could be partly a product of Big Brother's formal brainwashing programs, the novel explicitly shows people learning Doublethink and newspeak due to peer pressure and a desire to "fit in", or gain status within the Party — to be seen as a loyal Party Member.
