Les fortifications sont des constructions militaires ou des bâtiments conçus pour la défense des territoires dans la guerre, et ont également utilisé pour solidifier la règle dans une région pendant le temps de paix. Les humains ont construit des travaux défensifs pendant plusieurs milliers d'années, dans une variété de designs de plus en plus complexes. Le terme est dérivé du latin fortis et facere. De l'histoire très ancienne aux temps modernes, les murs ont été une nécessité pour les villes de survivre dans un monde en constante évolution d'invasion et de conquête. Certaines colonies dans la civilisation de la vallée de l'Indus ont été les premières villes à être fortifiées. Dans la Grèce antique, de grands murs de pierre avaient été construits en Grèce mycénienne, comme l'ancien site de Mycènes. Un Phrourion était une collection fortifiée de bâtiments servant de garnison militaire et équivaut à la forteresse anglaise ou au castellum. Ces constructions ont principalement pour but d'une tour de guet, de garder certaines routes, des passages et des terrains préjudiciables au royaume. Bien que plus petite qu'une forteresse réelle, ces constructions agissaient comme un garde-frontière plutôt que comme un vrai point fort pour surveiller et maintenir la frontière. Fortifications are military constructions or buildings designed for the defense of territories in warfare, and also used to solidify rule in a region during peace time. Humans have constructed defensive works for many thousands of years, in a variety of increasingly complex designs. The term is derived from the Latin fortis and facere. From very early history to modern times, walls have been a necessity for cities to survive in an ever changing world of invasion and conquest. Some settlements in the Indus Valley Civilization were the first cities to be fortified. In ancient Greece, large stone walls had been built in Mycenaean Greece, such as the ancient site of Mycenae. A Phrourion was a fortified collection of buildings being used as a military garrison and is the equivalent of the Roman castellum or English fortress. These construction mainly served the purpose of a watch tower, to guard certain roads, passes, and lands detrimental to the kingdom. Though smaller than a real fortress, these constructions acted as a border guard rather than a real strongpoint to watch and maintain the border.
