Les premières preuves archéologiques d'ornements en forme de croix gammée remontent à la civilisation de la vallée de l'Indus ainsi qu'à l'Antiquité Classique méditerranéenne et à l'Europe paléolithique. Les Swastikas ont été utilisés dans diverses autres civilisations anciennes à travers le monde, y compris Turkic, Inde, Iran, Arménie, Népal, Chine, Japon, Corée et Europe. Il représente le principe d'origine de l'univers, ou de la vie, avec les quatre bras qui remueillent les quatre directions de l'univers manifeste. Il reste largement utilisé dans les religions indiennes et les religions de l'Extrême-Orient. Swastikas have been used in various other ancient civilizations around the world including Turkic, India, Iran, Armenia, Nepal, China, Japan, Korea and Europe. It represents the principle originating the universe, or life, with the four swirling arms representing the four directions of the manifest universe. It remains widely used in Indian religions and Far Eastern religions. The word "swastika" comes from the Sanskrit svastika - "su" combined with "asti", along with the diminutive suffix "ka." The swastika literally means "well-being." It is a common practice for Hindus to draw Swastika symbols on the doors and entrances to their houses during festivals, which is believed to symbolize an invitation to goddess Lakshmi. The name "sauwastika" is sometimes given to the left-facing arms symbol, which is a mirror image of swastika.
