Granite / ɡrænɨt / est un type commun de roches ignées intrusives felsiques, qui est en texture granulaire et phanératique. Le mot «granite» provient du latin granum, un grain, en référence à la structure à grain grossier d'une telle roche holocristalline. Le terme «granite» s'applique également à un groupe de roches ignées intrusives avec des textures similaires et de légères variations de composition et d'origine. Ces roches sont principalement constituées de feldspath, de quartz, de mica et de minéraux amphiboles. These form interlocking somewhat equigranular matrix of feldspar and quartz with scattered darker biotite mica and amphibole peppering the lighter color minerals. Occasionally some individual crystals are larger than the groundmass, in which case the texture is known as porphyritic. A granitic rock with a porphyritic texture is known as a granite porphyry. Granites can be predominantly white, pink, or gray in color, depending on their mineralogy. By definition, granite is an igneous rock with at least 20% quartz and up to 65% alkali feldspar by volume.
