Hotan, Hetian ou Khotan est le siège de la préfecture de Hotan dans le sud-ouest du Xinjiang, République populaire de Chine. Il était auparavant connu en chinois comme Yutian et les explorateurs européens du XIXe siècle comme Ilchi. Avec une population de 114 000 personnes, Hotan est une ville d'oasis située dans le bassin de Tarim, juste au nord des montagnes de Kunlun, traversées par le col de Sanju, et le hindou-tagh et Ilchi. The town, located southeast of Yarkand and populated almost exclusively by Uyghurs, is a minor agricultural center. An important station on the southern branch of the historic Silk Road, Hotan has always depended on two strong rivers - the Karakash River and the Yurungkash River, the Black and White Jade rivers respectively - to provide the water needed to survive on the southwestern edge of the vast Taklamakan Desert. The Yurungkash still provides water and irrigation for the town and oasis.
