Classical Latin
Le latin classique est le terme moderne utilisé pour décrire la forme de la langue latine reconnue comme standard par les écrivains de la dernière République romaine et de l'Empire romain. Dans certaines périodes ultérieures, il a été considéré comme un «bon» latin, les versions ultérieures étant considérées comme dégradées ou corrompues. Le mot «latin» est maintenant pris par défaut comme «latin classique», de sorte que, par exemple, les textes latins modernes décrivent le latin classique. Marcus Tullius Cicero et ses contemporains de la république tardive, tout en utilisant lingua Latina et sermo Latinus pour désigner la langue latine par opposition au grec ou à d'autres langues, et sermo vulgaris ou sermo vulgi pour se référer à la langue vernaculaire des non-scolarisés et moins instruits Les masses, considéraient le discours qu'ils appréciaient le plus et dans lequel ils ont écrit comme Latinitas, "la latinité", avec l'implication du bien. In some later periods it was regarded as "good" Latin, with later versions being seen as debased or corrupt. The word "Latin" is now taken by default as meaning "Classical Latin", so that, for example, modern Latin text books describe classical Latin. Marcus Tullius Cicero and his contemporaries of the late republic, while using lingua Latina and sermo Latinus to mean the Latin language as opposed to the Greek or other languages, and sermo vulgaris or sermo vulgi to refer to the vernacular of the uneducated and less-educated masses, regarded the speech they valued most and in which they wrote as Latinitas, "Latinity", with the implication of good. Sometimes it is called sermo familiaris, "speech of the good families", sermo urbanus, "speech of the city" or rarely sermo nobilis, "noble speech", but mainly besides Latinitas it was Latine, "in good Latin", or Latinius, "good Latin." Latinitas was spoken as well as written.
