Lories et lorikeets sont des perroquets arborescents de petite et moyenne taille caractérisés par leurs langues spéciales à pointe de brosse pour se nourrir de nectar de fleurs variées et de fruits doux, de préférence des baies. Les espèces forment un groupe monophylétique dans la famille des perroquets Psittacidae. Traditionnellement, ils ont été considérés comme une sous-famille distincte de l'autre sous-famille en fonction des caractéristiques spécialisées, mais des études moléculaires et morphologiques récentes montrent que le groupe est positionné au milieu de divers autres groupes. Ils sont largement distribués dans toute la région de l'Australasie, y compris l'Asie du Sud-Est, la Polynésie, la Papouasie-Nouvelle-Guinée, le Timor-Leste et l'Australie, et la majorité ont un plumage très brillant. Lories and lorikeets are small to medium-sized arboreal parrots characterized by their specialized brush-tipped tongues for feeding on nectar of various blossoms and soft fruits, preferably berries. The species form a monophyletic group within the parrot family Psittacidae. Traditionally, they were considered a separate subfamily from the other subfamily based on the specialized characteristics, but recent molecular and morphological studies show that the group is positioned in the middle of various other groups. They are widely distributed throughout the Australasian region, including south-eastern Asia, Polynesia, Papua New Guinea, Timor Leste and Australia, and the majority have very brightly coloured plumage.
