Les etesiens (/ ɨtiːʒəns / or / ɨtiːziənz /; Ancient Greek ετησίαι '(vent)', parfois trouvés dans la forme latine etesiae), meltemi μελτέμι (grec) ou meltem (turc) sont les vents forts et secs du nord La mer Égée, qui souffle d'environ la mi-mai à la mi-septembre. Selon C. Michael Hogan, les vents éthérés sont l'influence météorologique dominante dans le bassin égéen. Ils sont à leur plus fort dans l'après-midi et ils décèlent souvent la nuit, mais parfois les vents mélêques durent des jours sans interruption. Des vents similaires soufflent dans les régions adriatique et ionienne. Les vents de Meltemi sont dangereux pour les marins parce qu'ils surviennent par temps clair sans avertissement et peuvent souffler à 7-8 Beaufort. Certains yachts et la plupart des ferries inter-îles ne peuvent naviguer dans de telles conditions. Le mot grec dérive du mot grec έτος (étos), signifiant année, connotant leur fluctuation annuelle de la fréquence d'apparition. En effet, ces vents ont été décrits depuis les temps anciens et le mot etesian (grec: ετησίες) signifie annuel. La forme turque est probablement un prêt du mauvais temps italien mal. The etesians (/ɨˈtiːʒəns/ or /ɨˈtiːziənz/; Ancient Greek ετησίαι 'annual (winds)', sometimes found in the Latin form etesiae), meltemi μελτέμι (Greek), or meltem (Turkish) are the strong, dry north winds of the Aegean Sea, which blow from about mid-May to mid-September. According to C. Michael Hogan, the Etesian winds are the dominant weather influence in the Aegean Basin. They are at their strongest in the afternoon and often die down at night, but sometimes meltemi winds last for days without a break. Similar winds blow in the Adriatic and Ionian regions. Meltemi winds are dangerous to sailors because they come up in clear weather without warning and can blow at 7-8 Beaufort. Some yachts and most inter island ferries cannot sail under such conditions. The Greek word derives from the Greek word έτος (étos), meaning year, connotating their yearly fluctuation in frequency of appearance. Indeed, these winds have been described since ancient times and the word etesian (Greek: ετησίες) means annual. The Turkish form is probably a loan from Italian mal tempo 'bad weather'.
