Le nouveau dictionnaire encyclopédique de Webster définit la nation comme «une communauté de personnes composées d'une ou plusieurs nationalités avec son propre territoire et son gouvernement» et aussi «une tribu ou une fédération de tribus». La nation a des significations variées, et la connotation du terme a changé avec le temps. Le concept de «nation» est lié à la «communauté ethnique» ou à l'ethnie. Une communauté ethnique partage un mythe commun d'origines et de descendances, une histoire commune, des éléments de culture distinctive, une association territoriale commune et un sentiment de solidarité collective. Une nation est, par comparaison, beaucoup plus impersonnelle, abstraite et manifestement politique qu'un groupe ethnique. C'est une communauté culturel-politique qui a pris conscience de sa cohérence, de son unité et de ses intérêts particuliers. En ces termes, une nation a été définie par Benedict Anderson comme une «communauté imaginaire» ou par Paul James comme une «communauté abstraite». A nation is, by comparison, much more impersonal, abstract, and overtly political than an ethnic group. It is a cultural-political community that has become conscious of its coherence, unity, and particular interests. In these terms, a nation has been defined by Benedict Anderson as an "imagined community" or by Paul James as an "abstract community".
