Les rouleaux sont une famille du Vieux Monde, les Coraciidae, des oiseaux près de passerine. Le groupe tire son nom des acrobaties aériennes que certains de ces oiseaux effectuent lors de la cour ou des vols territoriaux. Les rouleaux ressemblent à des corbeaux en taille et à la construction, et partagent l'apparence colorée des martins-pêcheurs et des abeilleurs, des bleus et des marrons rosés ou à la cannelle prédominant. Les deux orteils avant intérieurs sont connectés, mais pas l'extérieur. Ils sont principalement des mangeurs d'insectes, avec des espèces d'Eurystomus prenant leur proie sur l'aile, et celles du genre Coracias qui plongent à partir d'une perche pour attraper des aliments sur le sol, comme des canailles géantes. Although living rollers are birds of warm climates in the Old World, fossil records show that rollers were present in North America during the Eocene. They are monogamous and nest in an unlined hole in a tree or in masonry, and lay 2–4 eggs in the tropics, 3–6 at higher latitudes. The eggs, which are white, hatch after 17–20 days, and the young remain in the nest for approximately another 30 days.
